Earwigs are elongated, flattened insects, reddish-brown to dark brown, ranging from roughly a quarter inch to about an inch long. The distinctive pair of pincer-like cerci at the rear of the abdomen makes them easy to recognize once you know what to look for. They live outdoors in mulch, leaf litter, and under debris, and they’re most active at night. When they move indoors, it’s almost always through small cracks in the foundation or gaps around exterior doors and windows.
